The Follow is recommended for a Small Peer to Peer Network

1. Backup

1.1 Netgear Network attached Storage Device

The Device Itself      Cost      Install Instructions

IDE Dive in the Netgear Storage device.   The best is Seagate because of 5 year Warranty, sweet point is $83 250G, best vendor is www.gogocity.com

Sync each My Documents on each PC on the Network to the NAS

SmartSync comes with Netgear Storage Central, additional copies are $30 for 2-9 PC.

1.2  Ghost each PC at least once/year with a Ghost Image to the NAS, burn a DVD from the NAS using the default 2G increments.  Make a Boot Disk for the Desktop or Laptop. Ghost 2003 works well and is not costly.  Microsoft OneCare has backup, Anti-Virus, Anti-spyware for $49 for 3 PC and support.  Symantec charges for their support $29/incident.  Plus their cost to is $30 for a 1 year renewal.    Need to check if OneCare backup is nightly or syncs as files are created.

This document compares Backup Software: http://data-backup-software-review.toptenreviews.com/  Needed is a solution that creates an exact image solution so a PC can be  back up quickly.

1.3 Purchase a DVD burner and burn critical files to DVD at least quarterly, monthly would be better.    Sony DVD from Newegg is good: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=Suggested&Description=27-131       Purchase DVD media in packs of 100 to lower cost.

2. Business Critical

2.1 Determine which PCs are "business critical" move them to 4 hour Dell maintenance by buying new HW and getting as long a maintenance agreement as you can get.  I know Dell will do 4 years on Laptops, because I just bought one for my daughter, it was $310, but she is 3.5 hours away from home.  The Cost 4 year Dell 4 hour Care is $410.

2.2 Keep a Spare PC around already network ready.  A laptop that is old works well for this.  Make sure it has networking and all Office software on it, including a legal copy of MS Office and any other used software.

2.3  Each PC should have a UPS to take it down gently in a power outage.

3.  Security Software

Patches use MS Automatic Updates, upgrade from Windows Update to Microsoft Update

Get to Office 2003 for each PC so Microsoft Update works on it.  If the Small Business is a Non-Profit, consider the MS Charity License.  Only 5 licenses are needed to use this resource.

          Use Microsoft OneCare

Use Sypbot Search and Destroyer Monthly with a Script, since you need a couple of products to protect you from Spyware.  Need a couple of Spyware products.

Make sure the MS Firewall is turned on and functioning.

Scan the network with Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer and fix holes.

4.  Wireless Network

The Current network is configured as #1:

Is it
1)   Internet ----Router for church -----router for guests

or 2) Internet----Router for Guests-----Router for church staff

                                            |------Router for Guests
or 3)  Internet----switch-----------|
                       FW/VPN        |------Router for Church Staff

This allows guest PCs on the Church network.  A better solution is to a $100 VPN/FW device such as this:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002I7288/ref=pd_cp_e_title/104-9762864-6511959?ie=UTF8

here is a write up on Amazon for the device.  Another good byproduct is that it is a VPN gateway for the Local LAN.

Great little router to run your home office, July 18, 2006

The main reason I bought this router was for its dedicated DMZ port. What good is this? Since the RV042 has three discrete ethernet controllers (one for the WAN, one for the LAN, and one for the DMZ) you can easily create routine rules that allows a machine to be visible to the internet AND keep your LAN safe.

Many low end home routers have a DMZ-like facility, but this really just opens up a single port to a computer within your LAN. The problem with this is that if the "DMZ" computer gets compromised it is on your LAN! That means other machines could potentially get compromised.

This is not the case with the RV042. You can create routing rules that explicitly state what connections are allowed and what connections are disallowed. For example, any computer on my LAN can access any computer on my DMZ, however my DMZ can not access my LAN. This allows for excellent security.

The router supports the syslog protocol which allows you to send its system logs to a centralized logging system. This is a very common configuration for UNIX systems.

The one thing I would change about the RV042 is to give it 1000BaseT ports. You can simply add a Linksys SD2008 to accomplish this.

Have MACs on the internal Network in the Router for Laptops.

5. Consider doing a Free Microsoft Small Business Assessment

    http://www.microsoft.com/smallbusiness/products/server/small-business-server-2003r2.mspx

I am willing to complete this with proper documentation.

6.  Other Software on Every PC

    Adobe Acrobat

Free Adobe PDF Creator, http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp download both the Converter and the PDF Creator.

    WinZip to compress files.

WS_FTP to drop off files at FTP sites.

GoldWave to manipulate Wav and MP3 files.

Belarc Advisor to do security checks and what SW is installed

AOL IM to allow all office members to talk to their children or be "close in an emergency".  IM worked at 911, phones did NOT.

Consider purchasing SnagIT and Camtesia Studio for Non-profits for making Micosoft Media Player, QuickTime or FlashPlayer files.

Skype would be useful for taking to Missionaries overseas for free (Joe?).

7.  The General Plan  General Plan for Budgeting for a Church with no IT Budget

8.  Web

Define a Church "Acceptable Use Policy for Guest Wireless", i.e. no porn, no sex, no offensive language, etc.  Gaming?

Make the Church "Shared Storage" (define in #1 above) area where all content should be stored.

Distribute the content to all Pastors and Ministry Areas of the Church, set up publishing account.  Only allow them to publish to their area..

Keep the content in FrontPage, not multiple products.  FrontPage works fine, since they are a Microsoft Office shop.   Everyone must use the same BRBC_Template.

    Train the web publishers.

9.  Remote Access to BRBC Church Network NOT Guest Network

Set up the Linksys VPN Gateway defined in #4

    Install client on Laptops and

Train on how to access the network.

Linksys supports dyndns.org native in their routers.  Set up BRBC.dyndns.org  and monthly renew it for free.
